As the novella progresses, he transforms into the embodiment of true Christmas spirit, reflecting Dickens' call for social change in a divided Victorian society. This essay will explore the different forms of change Scrooge experiences; moral in his remorse for his earlier Malthusian ideologies, social he breaks free from his chains of isolation, and personal Scrooge's gratification for life itself rather than material commodities. In Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol', he exposes the corrupt mentality of the upper class' Malthusian attitude, an ideology Dickens opposes, and through the personification of the weather. The narrator introduces the image of Scrooge counting money, even though it's Christmas eve, it is cold and the fog is almost alive 'pouring in at every chink and keyhole', the use of pathetic fallacy reflects Scrooge's pessimism, the fog spreading everywhere is representative of how infectious negative attitudes can be. It also symbolises the clarity he lacks before his transformation. Some charity workers approach Scrooge's workplace and ask for a donation towards the poor, to which he replies 'are there no prisons? and union workhouses' through this rhetorical question Dickens is attempting to hold up a mirror to the reader; Scrooge's behaviour is clearly detached and wrong so Dickens is in hope the reader will begin to introspect. This is followed by 'If they would rather die, they had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.' This quote reflects the Malthusian theory that there will never be enough food to sustain everyone, and thus poverty is inevitable and there is nothing anyone can do, this belief is purposely challenged by Dickens through its message of compassion and charitable giving. However, although Scrooge seems indifferent towards the poor here, as the novella progresses he becomes aware of his callous words and begins to regret them when the Ghost of Christmas yet to come reminds him after watching Tiny Tim's death. The ghost questions Scrooge asking him why can some 'decide what men shall live, what men shall die.' This speech has an instant effect on Scrooge who turns from shock to horror to pleaing desperately clinging onto the ghost's 'deep black garment'. The repetition of “my little, little child” conveys raw grief, forcing Scrooge to confront the human cost of his past apathy, the possessive pronoun 'my' suggesting that he is beginning to take responsibility for others, this change is similar to Marley's change as he earlier tells Scrooge 'Mankind was my business'. The experience of Tiny Tim's death becomes a catalyst for Scrooge's redemption, showing that Scrooge, like the reader, are capable of change and aren't incorrigible as according to Christianity there will always be forgiveness for past sins. Scrooge's change in character is depicted throughout the extract, 'his own heart laughed: and that was enough for him' this links back to the earlier simile that described Scrooge 'as solitary as an oyster', these images were carefully chosen by Dickens to convey that Scrooge always had the capacity to change, as the 'oyster' is hard to crack but holds a pearl inside, which is the 'heart' now mentioned. The juxtaposition between 'laughed' and 'solitary' emphasises his change from social isolation to sociable; this could also suggest that human interaction is essential to becoming content. Change is also conveyed through his new sense of fulfilment without the need for materialistic desires, he sees happiness as 'quite enough for him.' this is a stark contrast to his earlier description of character 'darkness is cheap and Scrooge liked it.' 'A Christmas Carol' is a novella, a prose narrative that is halfway between a short story and a novel. Dickens called each section a stave not a chapter, a stave is the five lines music is written on. Through this choice, Dickens is reinforcing the idea that this is a Christmas story similar to the Christmas carols sung, which typically contain a message of new life and opportunities. Thus, Dickens utilises the form of 'A Christmas Carol' to convey his ideas of being reborn.
