Ambition is presented in the extract through Lady Macbeth rejecting her feminine qualities, becoming immoral and ruthless. In the play as a whole Macbeth portrays unchecked ambition through his constant paranoia of the safety of his position. Lady Macbeth also embodies this when she manipulates Macbeth into committing regicide. Lady Macbeth is shown as ambitious in the extract through her desperate desire to reject her natural motherly, nurturing and kind nature. Lady Macbeth fears she is "too full o' th' milk of human kindness." The noun "milk" has connotations of femininity. Shakespeare uses this to intensify her ambition as she effectively rejects the traditional female attributes of compassion and nurtures and rejects her maternal instincts for power. Similarly she also portrays this when she says "Glamis thou art, and Cawdor, and shalt be what thou art promised." The repetition of titles is used to convey her manifestation of the witches' prophecy and her envisioning their ascent to power. Shakespeare uses Lady Macbeth as a femme fatale as she is not only manipulative but rejects her womanhood and motherhood. This would have shocked the audience of the Jacobean period as women were seen as lower than men in the great chain of being and therefore wouldn't be this assertive and dominant. Throughout the play Macbeth embodies unchecked ambition through his constant paranoia of being dethroned. After ascending to the throne Macbeth says "to be thus is nothing, but to be safely thus." Shakespeare uses the word "nothing" to highlight the precariousness of Macbeth's position. He becomes a tyrannical leader because of his obsessive need to control due to how he got the position. In the Jacobean period people believed in the divine right of kings, the idea the king was appointed by God. Because of this Macbeth believed he was illegitimate causing his ambition to be his hamartia. Shakespeare's intention was to warn the noble men in the audience against ambition as it lead to self-destruction. Ambition is also shown by Lady Macbeth throughout the play as she manipulates Macbeth into committing regicide. She tells Macbeth "when you durst do it then you were a man," she uses this to emasculate Macbeth insinuating men are supposed to be brave and ruthless. Similarly she portrays this when she exclaims "give me the daggers" after the regicide. The imperative verb "give" is used to portray her as the more powerful partner in the relationship who has more control. Lady Macbeth conveys this to make Macbeth feel insecure and timid. The Jacobean period had a patriarchal society, were menheld authority over women. Lady Macbeth defies traditional patriarchy by exerting influence over Macbeth and subverting her expected role as a submissive wife. This illustrates how her ambition causes her to be an atypical woman for that period.
