Off from the back of World War 2, the USSR had the highest casualty rate out of all the countries on the side of the allies. This led to Stalin concluding that he needed a buffer zone to protect him from an easy attack which would end in high casualties. Firstly, he set up communist political parties in most of the eastern European countries. He ensured that these parties would win the next elections but he would attack if needed. In Hungary, the communists controlled the police and took control of the government in 1947 by force. enemies were imprisoned and killed. However, the general elections of Poland in 1947 were rigged in the favour of the communists. This control and power over eastern Europe allowed Stalin to set up satellite states which were not territorial parts of the Soviet Union but governmentally controlled by them. Most leaders were puppets to Stalin and were forced to hand over any resources and by loyal to communism.
