In ‘Autumn’ and ‘Today’, both poets use personification to describe the seasons, although they form different impressions of them. However, the poets use a different structure to help them present their different impressions. In ‘Autumn’ by Alan Bold, the season Autumn is described as an ‘experienced robber’ with ‘the wind [as] his accomplice’ together forming ‘an air of chaos’. Bold’s use of personification allows him to describe the season as out of control, which shows that he is cautious and wary of autumn, just like one would be of a robber. Similarly, Collins uses personification to show spring ‘releasing the inhabitants’ with the verb ‘releasing’, which shows spring as a saviour who frees the trapped rather than something to be afraid or cautious of. However, ‘Autumn’ is written as one long stanza, with enjambment, for example 'Autumn arrives/Like’ and ‘leaves are suddenly blown/In the faces’. This speeds up the poem, adding to the chaos and frenzy, which helps Bold present the season as out of control. However, ‘Today’ is written in 9 couplets. The constant pauses and varied punctuation reinforce the soothing impression formed by the reader and help the poet present spring as calm. In conclusion, both poets use personification to help present their impressions of the seasons in their poems, however, they use different structures, which helps emphasise the differences between the poems.
