Lady Macbeth undergoes severe change throughout the play. This extract, taken from Act 5 Scene 1 shows Lady Macbeth once she has succumbed to the guilt. The guilt has built up from the start of the extract until it reaches it's peak and 'infects' Lady Macbeth. She was the strongest character in the play, however we now see how she's overwhelmed with guilt. She uses the metaphor 'Here's the smell of the blood still; all the perfumes of Arabia will not sweeten this little hand.' to show the immense guilt she feels and how she wishes she could get rid of it. However, not even the perfumes of Arabia which is known to have the strongest perfumes, can get rid of the metaphorical blood symbolising guilt. Rather the guilt has also infected Lady Macbeth's 5 senses. It starts off with her vision as she sleepwalks and she later goes on to emphasise how she can smell the blood, the guilt has metaphorically corrupted her sense of smell and vision. Not only that but Lady Macbeth later goes on to say "Wash your hands...look not so pale" which is ironic as Lady Macbeth is clearly afraid and distraught yet she says 'look not so pale'. The part where she talks about 'washing your hands' is a reference to her husband when he too felt guilt once Duncan was killed and used the metaphor of Neptune's Ocean to wash the blood off his hands. In the extract as a whole, Lady Macbeth started off as the most strongest mortal character. She knew that her femininity would interfere with her driving ambition to be Queen Consort, hence why she called upon the supernatural to get rid of her feminine qualities. This is ironic as the supernatural was feared upon especially those regarding witchcraft, however for Lady Macbeth to call upon them shows how strong and brave she truly is. She asked they 'unsex me here' showing how she wanted to be stripped of her feminine and tender qualities. Later on she says 'take my milk for gall' showing how she wishes to be stripped of anything regarding motherhood as well. She doesn't want the 'milk' or the 'breasts' associated with her anymore. She goes against the set gender roles in which women were meek and tender ending up as a femme fatale. She seduces Macbeth to the detriment making her the dominant person in their relationship. She emasculated him getting him to do what she wanted re-inforcing how she was a powerful driving force throughout the play.
