The Cosmological Argument is an a posteriori inductive argument that uses the laws and logic of the universe to prove that the God of Classical Theism exists. Many may see its scientific and evidence-backed nature as beneficial to the theists side as it gives room for Atheists to agree with the premises as there is little faith involved. However, this could also be inconvenient for some theists who believe that they need faith alone to validate their beliefs. In this essay, I will be be moreover arguing against this statement that the cosmological argument does have value for religious faith because of its recognition to the omnipotence of God and His intricate creation. The reason why I would disagree with this statement is because this theodicy gives hard-backed evidence for the existence of a creator as it argues that it is simply illogical for there to be the absence of an unmoved mover and an uncaused causer according to Aquinas. It also rejects ideas like infinite regression which can be commonly rejected by atheists too. This would therefore give reassurance to one with religious faith, because people with faith tend to revolve their life around religion, and if there is scientific evidence to prove that their faith is correct, and isn't simply an imaginary belief, then there is more confidence and a drive to remain on Gods path. Things like God's necessary nature where He must exist and does not rely on anything to exist, also reminds theists of God's unique qualities which is vital in ensuring that a theist remembers God's greatness and perfection. It allows theists to admire God especially as they can associate such intricate laws in the universe to the one creator, God. It is commonly mentioned in Holy Books like the Bible and the Quran, that we must constantly admire the universe and God's creation around us and so the cosmological argument allows us to reflect on them. This is why it would lead me to disagree with the statement because the cosmological argument works in favour to prove the existence of God using science and physics. However, despite the argument working in favour of a theist, the cosmological argument contains many flaws as it generalises the existence of a designer and uncaused causer, which serves no purpose to for example a monotheist if there isn't specific evidence to prove the existence of one God. The cosmological argument unlike other arguments like the design argument, puts a large emphasis on physics with no relation to traditional religious ideas. However it is crucial to remember that the point of such arguments is not to reaffirm a theists faith, but its to challenge atheists on a more logical approach. It is therefore vital to use universally agreed upon facts, such as the illogicality of an infinite regress of causes and effect and so although the cosmological argument can serve no value to a theist, it encourages the spreading of faith which is encouraged in most religions, specifically christianity, where evangelism is highly encouraged. This would therefore count as evangelism as you are spreading the religion of God in a way that levels with an atheist's mind. And although this argument doesn't rule out polytheism, it provides a crucial step forward towards the truth of the existence of a God. To conclude, the cosmological argument despite its lean towards logicality and scientific laws, most definitely contains value for religious faith. Aside from the evangelistic view towards the argument and its benefit to a third party rather than yourself, this argument reaffirms the belief in God and allows us to admire the intricate laws of universe that allow us to reflect on God's omnipotence and omnibenevolence.
