Wilfred owen immediately establishes the state of the soldier to reveal the reality of war victims and to evoke sympathy within the reader. He notes ‘ he sat in a wheeled chair, waiting for dark’ introducing the devastated state of the soldier.the use of the the continuous verb “waiting” for the “dark” shows that the soldier wants the night to come so he can sleep to escape this devastating life, as he mentions later on the poem that sleeping is the source of comfort and wants someone to ‘put him to bed’. Although this can also contribute to another message; dark can be seen as a metaphor for death and the fact that he does not only wait, but rather uses the continuous verb shows that perhaps this he is waiting for a permanent sleep rather than a temporary one. This is also seen in terms of structure, the writer uses continuous caesura through the line. Caesura are usually used for a momentary pause, so the repetition of them can be seen as his long wait for the relief from the monotony of his life. Additionally, the poet also describes his physical state to add on top of his mental state to create a sense of pity. He mentions that he ‘shivered in his ghastly suit of grey’ using vivid imagery to share his torturous state. The use of the word “ghastly” echoes the word “ghostly” can be seen as a description of how drained he is from his constant fight against death in order to survive. Hence, he is described through the noun ‘grey; which has the connotation of something dull and depressing. However, this can also reveal the dear truth of victims of war. The fact that he is seen as grey with no color can reveal his lack of importance to society, as the color grey is often ignored or avoided to use. Hence, his wish to die as he sees no value to someone who was onced ‘cheered’ for his accomplishment. By revealing his current state, Owen successfully revealed the harsh reality of injured soldiers and evokes sympathy within the reader. Lastly, Owen also reveals how the soldier is now treated to create a sense of compassion for the soldier. He mentions " All touched him like a queer disease” revealing how terrible the soldier is treated by others after he got injured from war. The use of the simile ‘like a queer disease’ reveals how he was treated unnaturally and inhuman by the ‘girls’ despite him being cheered for the “blood smear down his leg”. This declarative sentence also illustrates sickness imagery, which may reveal that he does not only suffer from the girls, but rather the nurses too. Hence, the use of cyclical cycle where he begins the poem sitting in the dark at the start and end questioning in the same state. Adding on, the use of the diseased imagery may also imply another message. Perhaps Owen is referring to society as diseased by war rather than the soldier being one, and him only being a symptom of it. By illustrating the harsh reality of how society sees the winded as foolish rather than honourable, Owen successfully evokes pity within the reader.
