I partially agree that Dick's anger towards Mary is unfair. One of the most powerful ways the writer shows that Dick's anger towards Mary is unfair is by describing Mary "suffering" "hardships". The verb "suffering" connotes pain. The writer has skilfully done this to evoke sympathy from the reader, making the reader sympathise with Mary's situation. Additionally, Mary says that she "can't stand it" and wants to "cool herself". This makes her reason of pouring the water clear and therefore suggests that she is not "wasting" it like Dick says she is. By showing to the reader that pouring the water serves a purpose, the writer again makes the reader sympathise with Mary. Another effective way the writer shows that Dick's anger is unfair is by portraying Dick as a person who only cares about money. Dick says that it "costs money" to fetch water, suggesting that he is angry solely because Mary is using his money to cool herself. The reader may dislike Dick as he seems to care about money more than Mary. By portraying Dick as a tight-fisted person, the writer skilfully makes the reader dislike Dick and therefore thinks that his anger is unfair. However, the writer presents the water as scarce and limited. The writer describes their city as not raining "for another month" and describes the water as only "fetched twice a week". The writer makes it clear that their access to water is very limited. This creates the idea that the water needs to be used carefully and not to be wasted by Mary pouring the water over herself. This may make the reader feels angry towards Mary for wasting the water and therefore makes the reader thinks that Dick's anger is fair. Additionally, the writer describes the fetching prairs of the water as "as if someone were in agonised pain" which shows that the water is fetched in a very difficult and painful way. This shows why Mary should not waste the water and makes DIck's anger seem fair. Furthermore, I strongly agree that Mary is totally powerless in this relationship. The writer makes this clear by describing Mary as living "uncomplainingly" and becomes "sorry because of the way he had spoken to her". The writer potrays Mary as a quiet and obedient character in front of Dick and suggests that she may be scared to express her won opinions to him as she does not complain. Additionally, the writer uses the repetition of "!" in Dick's dialogue. This emphasises how loud Dick talks to Mary, making Mary seem powerless.
