Blake crafts 'London' to expose the shady and restricting power held by organisations, similarly yet a bit differently to how Browning highlights the patriarchal control over women, and their lack of freedom, raising awareness considering the unjust treatment of women. This is a topic that resonated quite closely to his own ideals, as he was an activist for women's rights and he wrote 'My Last Duchess' in criticism of man's overprotectiveness over women. During the time Blake wrote 'London' there was also a large issue of ownership, but rather ownership over people and control over them using a position of power and Blake writes in hopes of exposing the prevalent issues of his society. Blake structures 'London' to be extremely regular, not allowing for any difference or uniqueness. The poem consists of 4 stanzas, all with 4 lines made up of an iambic tetrameter pacing. The regularity of the poem indicates a lack of freedom for self expression, an extremely important aspect of Blake's romanticism. It also shows the continuity of the poor's suffering, as their condition never changes. However, in Browning's 'My Last Duchess' , he employs a dramatic monologue, significant in truly describing the power the Duke holds. Throughout the poem, the Duke doesn't allow anyone else to speak, as he relays the events concerning the Duchess through himself, as the reader is unable to hear directly from the Duchess. Furthermore, the Duke speaking in first-person demonstrates his possessiveness as him only allowing himself to speak and no one else shows his control over people, and people's lack of freedom to speak their mind. Furthermore, Blake also implements an ABAB rhyme scheme which is constant throughout the play, once again referencing to the repeated struggle of the lower classes as they struggle under the constraint of the upper echelon of society in order to expose the unjust use of power present daily in his times which limited the freedoms of citizens in London. Browning uses the dramatic monologue to shine a light on an unfair treatment of women which restricts their power, as the Duchess doesn't have freedom to do what she wants and say what she wants, even after death. Additionally, Blake also refers to a direct ownership of the population, indication how he sees "marks of weakness, marks of woe" on every person he meets. Here, the "marks" could be taken by a general meaning, showing the devastating effects of incorrect usage of power upon the lower classes, as their restriction from freedom by the upper classes brings feelings of "weakness" and "woe". Alternatively, "marks" could be a metaphorical reference to the people being branded, as if they were owned like property. This idea of direct human ownership, emphasises Blake's message in exposing the darkness surrounding the rich and powerful as he tells us that they own the poor as if they were objects. Similarly, Browning also paints the Duke to have that aura of possessiveness, as he explains the significance of his "[my] last duchess" being " painted on the wall". Browning's use of the possessive pronoun "my" directly references to the Duke owning the Duchess, even after death. Furthermore, her being "painted on the wall" demonstrates the Duke's objectification of her even after her death, showing control and a lack of freedom even after death, similar to the riches' ownership of the poor in Blake's London. Blake further emphasises the dangers of extensive power within the richest in society while Browning highlights a women's lack of freedom when faced with the typical man of the time as the man's control runs over after the woman's death.
