Throughout the entire play, fear is a large theme, running at every point. We can see this fear in Lady Macbeth. Despite her cold, hard, solid emotional exterior, Lady Macbeth is still one of the most dramatic characters in the play Macbeth. During the time the play was written, women were not seen to be the more powerful gender, and through having such a headstrong character like Lady Macbeth, Shakespeare is able to blame it on the weird sisters and bring in the supernatural. Thus, when Lady Macbeth is in a state bereft of supernatural influence, the real pent-up feelings of fear and sheer panic come out. We can see this just after Duncan's death, Macbeth returns the knives that were used for murder as it states ""No! the daggers must be there"" stated by Lady Macbeth. It is heard from her voice, as the voice is full of fear. Then, she just takes over to return the daggers herself just shows the way she puts in her mind could only be taken off if doing it herself ends. Lady Macbeth is one of the most complex characters that Shakespeare used to show the audience that women played a much larger part in society than many understood. Women were not just supposed to sit and look pretty, but also harbored feelings of fear, anger, and disgust, just like men, though they were not allowed to show it, lest they be considered dramatic or controlling, as is ultimately the case with Lady Macbeth. However, through the play, Lady Macbeth conceals her fear. She does not reveal her concern around Macbeth and drives herself to insanity alone in her room. We see this being conducted when after the death of Duncan, Lady Macbeth is trying to calm Macbeth saying, "A little water clears us of this deed." She is saying that once they wash their hands everything will be gone and their guilt will disappear. Except it doesn't, later in the play Lady Macbeth exclaims, "out! out! damned spot"" as her guilt has translated itself into a ghost of hands full of blood. Having the character of Lady Macbeth be strong in public but fragile in private, Shakespeare develops how her guilt slowly eats her up and takes her life. Having to constantly support Macbeth, Lady Macbeth doesn't have enough emotional support of her own; thus, this leads her to sleepwalk every night. Her sleepwalking acts as evidence that she has been put under an immense amount of stress, and we are made to bear witness to the fact that the last thing she feels is fear and agony. She held Macbeth up, but who held her up? Macbeth was so consumed by his own fear and guilt that it ended up pulling Macbeth and Lady Macbeth further apart and putting a wedge in their relationship.
