Shakespeare, who wrote Macbeth in support of James I, uses the witches to show their ability to corrupt morality and destabilise society in order to warn his Jacobean audience on the dangers of associating with the supernatural. Shakespeare presents the witches as not only able being able to lure him in but also question his loyalty. This is seen in Act 1 Scene 3 when he orders the Witches to "Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more", showing his desire for knowledge from the supernatural, even if considered treachery or a sin. Macbeth's use of the imperative "Stay" reveals his urgency - he is desperate to listen to what the witches have to tell him, hence showing how, despite knowing these witches are "imperfect", and therefore evil, he is lured into making the choice to listen to them further. It's almost as if he listens to these "wicked" witches by his own free will, because he has been lured in by them with desirable "truths", despite the malicious intent of the witches. Perhaps, Shakespeare wants us to warn his contemporary audience about how catastrophic meddling with the supernatural can be - "Brave Macbeth" quickly turned "wicked" after listening to only a few of the witches equivocations. As a result, this links to Shakespeare's aim to support James I, who wrote the book 'Daemonology' which depicted the severe threat of witches that needed to be purged. Shakespeare uses the witches to show how deeply they are able to corrupt Macbeth's morality. This is seen when the witches ironically proclaim that "something wicked this way comes" when Macbeth returns to the witches in Act 4 Scene 1. Here, the witches ironically call Macbeth the evil one, juxtaposing his morality when he previously visited the witches as a "Brave" man, indicating how greatly he has changed after listening to the witches equivocations. By using the word "something", it reduces Macbeth, who is currently king, to an unrecogisable being, which suggests how severe this change has been. Despite being king, he is unrecognisable, hence revealing how this position of power is not his to hold. Shakespeare wants to teach a reader how Macbeth's ambition driven by the witches' equivocations has triggered his hamartia; he is pushed towards doing immoral acts that lead him to eternal damnation by the witches. Therefore, the witches' have been able to invert his morality, as foreshadowed in the beginning of the play where they would turn "fair" to "foul", highlighting the dangers for a Jacobean audience to associate with the supernatural. Shakespeare presents how the witches are able to convince Macbeth despite their clear malevolent intent. We see this when Banquo warns that these "instruments of darkness tell us truths" in order to "betray in deepest consequences". Here, Banquo warns Macbeth early on in the play - Act 1 Scene 3 - that these witches have no intention of helping them, rather that they would deceive Macbeth into acting against his morals. The metaphor of an "instrument" is used to show how the witches will play with you in order to lure you into a false sense of security; Macbeth is fooled into thinking the witches' predictions are truthful, but fails to see the grave consequences of listening to what they have to say. It's almost as if Banquo foreshadows how the witches will deceive Macbeth, showing how powerful the witches are in their ability to coerce Macbeth. Despite Macbeth being able to see in front of his eyes how the witches give him ambiguous answers to misguide him, he listens to their words, showing his desire for power regardless of the consequences. Macbeth is driven by their word's to the point that he is willing to be eternally damned just to ensure their prophecies come true, highlighting how susceptible "Brave Macbeth" was to the supernatural, and hence how Shakespeare's audience should be careful in order to ensure they are not reeled into immorality like Macbeth. Thus, Shakespeare reveals how the power of the supernatural cannot go understated; they are capable of convincing Macbeth, despite the clear signs of their malice, to act against God and lead to his eternal damnation, a punishment that a Jacobean audience feared.
