Stevenson cleverly crafts the idea of violence and crime within the extract as Hyde attacked Carew with a 'great flame of anger'. The use of the metaphor 'flame of anger' connotes how intense the fury that Hyde had attained within himself. Additionally, this presents how immoral Hyde is as his 'anger' is compared to flames which are indestructible and incredibly feared. However, this also illustrates how quickly Hyde is to anger which presents his concern of lack of control over his own emotions. Moreover, this makes the readers feel extremely inferior to Hyde due to his lack of empathy for humans. This will make the readers feel more uncomfortable as during the 1800s there was a rise of murders like Jack the Ripper in lower class areas. Furthermore, the use of the vigorous noun 'flame' has connotations of red,heat and pain. The writer uses the noun 'flame' to elicit fear and uncertainty into the readers as flames are unstoppable and eliminate everything within its radius. The nature of flames being unpredictable links to the behaviour of Hyde as well as the dangers of Jekyll and Hyde co-existing similarly to water and fire can only exist one at a time. This strongly correlates to the attitude of Mr Hyde as he tramples onto people until their bones shattering are audible. Next, this relates to the sensation of crime within the 1800s that was heavily associated with physiognomy. This is where criminals were determined by their class and appearance. Stevenson evokes the idea of violence and crime through the comparison of flames to the violent nature of Hyde.
