Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as malevolent and dominant at the beginning of the play, by controlling and emasculating Macbeth to manipulate him to commit regicide. Lady Macbeth does this by questioning 'durst do it, then you were a man', she does this to make Macbeth feel like he is a child and making Macbeth seem lower than Lady Macbeth, and makes her more powerful than him. The noun 'man' symbolises that Lady Macbeth has a fixed idea of what a man should be, and these qualities would be: Violent, strong, powerful and remorseful. Lady Macbeth plants ambition into Macbeth through the quote 'Look like the (innocent flower) but be the serpent under't', this invokes the idea that Lady Macbeth is saying 'look pure and innocent but underneath be duplicitous. She is almost tempting Macbeth to commit one of the major sins, as this would be Biblical imagery of 'The Garden of Eden' as Satan tempts Eve to eat the apple. It is almost like Lady Macbeth is the whispers from Satan, this could almost suggest that Lady Macbeth is like the fourth witch, as witches are also like the whispers from Satan to deliver people to evil. Shakespeare does this to make the Jacobean audience feel horrified from Lady Macbeth's actions, because they would believe that a woman should be nurturing, loving and obedient to her husband, and Lady Macbeth does not have these qualities, as she doesn't treat her husband as an equal. This would fall into the theme of gender in the Jacobean era. Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a powerful character in the play, as she dismisses kindness as a weakness. She does this through the metaphor 'Unsex me here', she says this to call to the spirits to strip her feminine qualities to become the ultimate evil. She also does this to 'Pour spirits in thine ear', this suggests that Lady Macbeth will do anything to have unchecked and uncontrollable ambition, and to influence Macbeth to be consumed by ambition to commit regicide. The word 'Pour' symbolises that Lady Macbeth is dedicated to commit regicide by any means. Her techniques imagery of children to make Macbeth feel 'too full of the milk of human kindness', as the word 'milk' symbolises purity and softness. Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as powerful and having an ambition for power because she is determined to move and become higher in the heirarchy. This would be shocking for the Jacobean audience that people are trying to move through the chain of beings. This would be unnatural since they believe that God has put people in their level of life, if someone is jumping through different levels this would be disrespectful to God. Shakespeare shows that Lady Macbeth has changed at the end of the play by being engulfed by guilt. The stage direction '(enters with a taper)' is ironic because at the beginning of the play Lady Macbeth calls to the spirits to cover her with 'the darkness of hell', as this symbolises that she wants to become one of the supernatural and to work alongside Satan. However, Lady Macbeth is always holding a 'taper' as this invokes the idea that she always wants to have light with her, because she is seeking for hope and salvation. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth shout 'Out Damn'd spot, I say', this sparks the start of Lady Macbeths paranoia and her hallucination. This also suggests that Lady Macbeth's guilt turns into madness and that her guilt is her hamartia and leads to her death. The motif of blood symbolises that the more Macbeth kills, the more the motif of blood occurs throughout the play. As his killing infects the people of Scotland, even his own wife. Shakespeare has done this to show the Jacobean audience, that a women who disobeyed the natural order from god and a feminine qualities will have a massive fatal flaw, and a Lady Macbeth is a significant example of this as she asks the Satan to strip away her femininity qualities as this would be shocking and disgusting to Jacobean audience and to God.
