In a Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens presents greed. Written in 1843 during the industrial revolution, the novella presents Scrooge's greed and his terrible attitude towards Christmas. Dickens uses Scrooge to show greed and hatred in a Christmas Carol. Dickens also uses short sentences to show Scrooge's attitude of arrogance and carelessness. Through greed Dickens critiques the Victorian society and the poor law of how we should be kind and care for those more needy, and be grateful for their family and what they do have. We can see Dickens present greed throughout the novella. We can see this in stave 1 where Scrooge's description is "solitary as an oyster." The technique being used here is a simile. We can see this in the word "as." The word "solitary" means to be alone and lonely and the word "oyster" means to be closed, refers to something closed off and untouchable. To describe someone as "solitary as an oyster" means he's alone and keeps to himself and is untouchable and doesn't like to share or give charity. This makes the reader see how greedy and introverted Scrooge is. Therefore this clearly shows how Dickens uses Scrooge through stave 1 to show greed throughout the novella. Also Dickens mentions the word solitary many times throughout the novella which clearly indicates Scrooge's greediness as people who are greedy are alone.Dickens presents greed in the novella by using Scrooge's childhood. We can see this in stave 2 where the Christmas spirit has taken Scrooge back to his childhood and he is described as a "solitary child neglected." It shows how Scrooge is a forlorn childhood as the antagonist since childhood. We can see this in the word "neglected" where Scrooge hasn't been looked after which caused him to be solitary. This can show his greed has been formed since childhood. Dickens presents greed in this extract by using Belle. We can see this in the quote "Another idol has displaced me; a golden one." The technique of being used is a metaphor because a person cannot be an "idol." By Dickens using the word "idol" it shows something higher than him because some people worship idols and to be replaced by a "golden one" shows he has been replaced by someone much superior, better than him. This makes Scrooge reflect on his greed in this situation with Belle. Therefore Dickens has indicated/conveyed greed throughout the novella and this extract by using Belle, Scrooge & Scrooge's childhood.
